2008 Tiger Invitational Final Results
Clemson, S.C. - The Western Carolina Track & Field teams traveled down to Clemson, S.C. over the weekend to take part in the Tiger Invitational and came back with three victories, nine podium finishes, and a meet-high 33 top-tens. The Women's Distance Medley Relay team of Kerri Savery, Annie Bailey, Raquel Ramseur, and Megan Isaacs shattered the school record in the event with a time of 11:58.68, more than 16 seconds under the previous record time, set in 2005. It was also the first time in school history that a team finished in under 12 minutes, and was good for second place in the event.
In the men's 400-meter dash, WCU's Manteo Mitchell took home the victory with a time of 47.96 seconds, which is the fastest time on the team this season, breaking his own previous record, set at the Akron Open. His mark was a mere half-second off the school record, set back in 2002. Coming in just behind Mitchell in second place was teammate Zeb Johnson, at 48.13 seconds. The victory in the 400-meter dash is the third of the indoor season for Mitchell, who now holds three of the top four fastest times in the event this year for the Catamounts.
Savery picked up her fourth victory of the year in the 800-meter run, tripping the tape in a team-best time of 2:12.71, a full three seconds lower than the previous top time for the season. Savery continued to show her impressive versatility this indoor season, and now has wins in three different events: the 800-meter run, the mile run, and the distance medley relay.
In the women's 200-meter dash, Ramseur added to her already successful weekend with a runner-up finish and a team-best time of 24.76 seconds, topping her own season best mark of 24.84. She took top honors in her finals heat, and tripped the tape a mere .04 seconds behind the first-place runner in the event.
Mitchell and Johnson took their back-to-back finishes to the 60-meter dash, where they crossed the line in second and third place, respectively. Mitchell's runner-up time of 6.88 seconds was a season-best for him, just ahead of Johnson's mark of 6.92 seconds, joining his teammate on the podium in third place.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Mitchell, Johnson, Drew Tucker, and Duke Craig continued their season-long dominance with a second-place finish and a season-best time of 3:15.93, shaving almost a full second of their previous best mark. WCU has now placed at least one 4x400 relay team in the top three of ever meet so far in this indoor season. They were joined in the top five by the "B" team of Jestin Jennings, Jeff Reinke, Thomas Funderburke, and Aaron Grant, who came in fifth with a time of 3:22.98.
Not to be outdone, the women's 4x400-meter relay took home first place in their event for the third time this season. The squad, consisting of Ramseur, Janet Carothers, Tangelia Johnson, and Shalyn McMichael, ran a 3:48.76 final time, which is the third-fastest time on the team this year.
Off the track, sophomore Michael O'Steen tied a season-high in the pole vault to finish in a tie for second-place. His final mark of 4.75 meters put him in a three-way jump-off, in which he came in with an overall third place in the event.
Junior Daniel Joseph was victorious in the triple-jump, with a top distance of 14.89 meters, a new season-best for the team. Joseph now owns the top three marks on the season in the event.
The Catamounts will now have two weeks off to prepare for the 2008 Southern Conference Indoor Championships, to be held right back at the Clemson University track on February 29-March 1. The two teams will look to build on their twin runner-up finishes in the SoCon meet last season, where they both came mere points away from taking home the titles.
