WCU's Mitchell and Evans Named Southern Conference Co-Track & Field Athletes of the Week

March 27, 2008

2007-08 Western Carolina Student-Athlete Honors

Cullowhee, N.C. - After a pair of dominating performances in the outdoor season's opening meet, the Southern Conference's track & field coaches selected Western Carolina's Manteo Mitchell and Matt Evans as the Men's Co-Track & Field Athletes of the Week.

Mitchell, a junior from Mooresboro, N.C., qualified for the NCAA regional in two events, the 200-meters and the 400-meters, at the Charlotte 49er Classic over the past weekend. Mitchell won the 400-meters with a time of 47.02 after running a 46.92 in the preliminaries, which was the top time for the entire meet.

Mitchell's time of 20.94 in the 200-meters was also a NCAA regional qualifying mark. He was the lead-off for both the 4x100-meter relay team and the 4x400-meter relay team. The relay teams both ran NCAA regional qualifying times. The 4x100-meter team ran 40.56 and the 4x400-meter relay team ran 3:09.75. Mitchell has the fastest time in the Southern Conference in the 200-meters and the 400-meters.

Evans, a sophomore from Marion, N.C., took runner-up honors in the men's javelin throw, with a final distance of 63.05 meters, which was a new school record. His distance also qualified him for the NCAA Regional Championships and was the top mark in the SoCon this year.

Evans then broke his second school record of the day in the men's high jump, clearing 2.10 meters, breaking the old mark of 2.08 meters, last accomplished in 1994. The height, which leads all SoCon high jumpers this season, also qualified Evans for the NCAA Regionals in the event.

The two will look to continue their early season success when they participate in the WCU Invitational this weekend in Cullowhee. The meet, which is hosted by Western, will take place all day on Saturday, March 29, at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
