2007-08 Western Carolina Student-Athlete Awards
Cullowhee, N.C. - Following their impressive performances at the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships this past weekend, the SoCon's track & field coaches selected Western Carolina's Raquel Ramseur and Matt Evans as the women's and men's track & field Athlete of the Month.
This is the second time that Evans and Ramseur have swept the conference awards this season. The pair took home the SoCon Male and Female Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards in the same week back in April.
Ramseur, a senior from Charlotte, N.C., won the 200-meters and 400-meters at the SoCon Championships, helping the Western Carolina women to the overall team title. She was also a part of the 4x100-meter relay team and 4x400-meter relay teams, both which placed first. She was the meet's only four-time winner, and was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer.
She has qualified for the NCAA regional in the 200-meters, with a time of 23.43 seconds, and the 4x100-meter relay, at 45.56 seconds, and holds the top time in the SoCon in both those event for the year, in addition to having the top spot in the 400-meters and 4x100-meter relay, as well as the third-fastest mark in the 100-meters in the conference.
Evans took home the conference title in the high jump, and was runner-up to WCU teammates in both the javelin throw and the decathlon. On the year, the sophomore has twice broken the school record in both the javelin, with a toss of 66.66 meters and high jump, with a top height of 2.10 meters, marks that have qualified him for the NCAA regional.
The Old Fort, N.C. native's high jump and javelin marks have also placed him in the top 30 nationally in those events, the only Catamount field athlete to have registered a national ranking this season.
The award is the third of the season for Evans, who, in addition to his Athlete of the Week honor in April, shared the SoCon's weekly award with teammate Manteo Mitchell the week of March 27. Ramseur, who was the SoCon indoor and outdoor rookie of the year during her freshman campaign, has been honored during the week twice during the indoor season and has two outdoor weekly honors over her four-year career, picking up her first Athlete of the Month award.
With the conference championships over, the two now join their Catamount teammates in turning their sights to qualifying for the NCAA regional in more events, and improving existing marks. The team will travel down the Clemson, S.C. this weekend for the Orange/Purple Classic. The one-day competition will take place on Saturday, May 10. The NCAA East Regional, which will be held in Tallahassee, Fla., will be on May 30-31.
