Western Carolina to Host 2007 Southern Conference Cross Country Championship in Cullowhee

Oct. 23, 2007

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina University will host the 2007 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee.

Western Carolina has hosted the annual conference meet three times doing so in 1982, 1990 and again in 1996 with former conference member, East Tennessee State, winning on the men's side and Appalachian State taking home the women's crown.

The WCU Cross Country Courses begin at Charles Schrader Field, adjacent the Catamount Athletic Complex (CAC). Runners will wind around the mountainous on-campus course with spectators rarely losing sight of the competition. The event will conclude on the soccer field in plain view of the grand stand seating area at the CAC with a level grade sprint to the finish line.

The Catamount Athletic Complex has played host to other conference championship events including the 2005 SoCon Outdoor Track & Field Championship during its inaugural season and the 2006 SoCon Women's Soccer Championship last fall.

Chattanooga is the defending champion on the women's side while Appalachian State claimed last year's championship in the men's competition in Chattanooga, Tenn.
