Catamount Men's Golf Slips to Tenth Place Finish at Pinehurst Intercollegiate

2008 Pinehurst Intercollegiate Results Get Acrobat Reader

Pinehurst, N.C. - Western Carolina slipped six positions in the final standings at the 2008 Pinehurst Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon, finishing tied for 10th in the final rankings with a three-round score of 908.

Western was led by freshman Caleb Marsh who shot his tournament-best 73 over the final 18 holes to finish tied for 23rd with a three-round score of nine-over, 225. Senior Matt Cook and junior Andres Cuenca each carded 76 on the final day to finish with a 54-hole score of 227, two strokes back in a tie for 32nd.

Rounding out the scoring for the Catamounts were sophomore Ricky Stout (t69th, 234) and junior Dustin Furnari (t74th, 235).

Led by individual medalist, Seth Brandon, and second-place Ren Han, 27th-ranked Indiana won the 2008 team championship by 24 strokes over Eastern Kentucky, 865-to-889. No. 17 Penn State, which Western stood tied with after two rounds, finished third with a 54-hole score of 895, followed by UNC Greensboro in fourth (897) and Virginia Commonwealth (898) rounding out the top five teams.

IU's Brandon shot an even-par 216 over the three-day event to edge teammate, Han, and two others by a stroke at 217. East Carolina's Markus Leandersson and Saint Mary's (Calif.) Mike McRae each tied Han at one-over.

The Catamounts return to action March 28-30 at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
