WCU Women's Soccer Goes 2-1 at ODP Showcase Tournament

April 6, 2008

Greensboro. N.C. - The Western Carolina Women's Soccer team headed down to Greensboro, N.C. over the weekend to take part in the Olympic Developmental Program Showcase, held at Bryan Park. On Saturday, the Cats played three matches against Lenior-Rhyne, Wake Forest, and East Carolina. Due to potentially severe weather in the area, each game was shortened to 35 minutes.

In the first game, WCU came out firing against L-R, scoring three goals and shutting down the Bears to take the contest by a 3-0 score. The Catamount goals were scored by redshirt sophomore Rachael Shomper, sophomore Katie Kole, and fellow sophomore Bri Cunningham, who also scored the winning against Francis Marion in spring action last week.

Western was unable to get on the board in the second 35-minute game against ACC power Wake Forest, falling 1-0 to the hometown Demon Deacons.

In the final contest of the day, the Catamounts faced off against familiar foe East Carolina, with whom WCU opens up their 2008 regular season against. Senior Lauren Atkinson scored the lone goal in the game, in which Western recorded their second shut out victory of the day, 1-0. These two teams will face off in the first game of the 2008 season down in Greenville, N.C. on August 22.

Last weekend's action wraps up the Cats spring season away from home, with their final two competition days coming in the friendly confines of the Catamount Athletic Complex.

WCU will welcome 20 NCAA Division I and II teams to the Catamount Athletic Complex (CAC) this Saturday, April 12 in a seven-a-side tournament. Games begin at 8:00 am and should run through mid-afternoon. Following the games, their will be a WCU Alumni game featuring both the men and women's alum.

On April 20, Western will host Western Kentucky University and Carson-Newman College for a round-robin tournament in which each school will face off against the others one time. The first game of the day, which will feature a battle of the "Westerns" between WCU and WKU, is scheduled to kick-off 11:30 am. Western Kentucky and Carson-Newman will face off in the 1:00 p.m. contest, with WCU and C-N squaring off in the finale at 2:30 pm.
