Massey Win's 10-6 Superset to Give Western Carolina 4-3 Win over UNC Pembroke

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Western Carolina's Amanda Massey won a 10-6 superset in the contest's deciding match to propel the Catamounts past UNC Pembroke, 4-3, Wednesday morning at the Port Royal Racquet Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

UNCP (4-4) took two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles competition, but WCU (2-7) won four of the six singles tilt to slip by the Braves.

The Western Carolina tandem of Mariona Jane and Susanna Sjokvist defeated Luciana Pereira and Christian Minnick, 8-0 at No. 2 doubles to capture the only match of the early competition. UNCP's duo of Janna Oxendine and Hannah Harling defeated Heather Bell and Emily Turke, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles, and the Braves grabbed the team point when Linda Tatala-Colin and Jenna McGary battled back from a 5-2 deficit to post an 8-6 win over Trish Hanson and Amanda Massey.

Tatala-Colin took down Hanson in a thrilling match at No. 1 singles, 6-3 and 6-1, and Christian Minnick registered her first singles match win of the season with a 6-0, 6-4 triumph over Heather Bell.

Jane defeated Harling, 6-3 and 6-2, at No. 3 singles, Sjokvist grabbed a 6-0, 6-2 win over Luciana Pereira at No. 4 singles and Turke used a 12-10 superset to defeat Daniela Pereira and set up the drama at court No. 2. Massey captured the first set with McGary by a 6-3 count, but McGary battled back to win the second set, 6-4.
